Flora Day is an ancient festival held each year in Helston on May 8th (except if it should fall on a Sunday or the bank holiday, when it is held on the previous Saturday) welcoming in the spring. Each year dancers dance through the streets and shops to the tune of the Furry Dance played by the town band. The town is dressed in spring foliage and flowers and there is a wonderful atmosphere of celebration.
In this painting I was hoping to capture the joy and spirit of the Children's Dance where the children dance through the town dressed in white. The girls wear flowers and the boys wear ties which represent their different schools. if you would like to know more about Flora Day, click here You can see live streaming on the day itself if you click here |
