I was interested in capturing the boats resting at different angles on the harbour bed at low tide, creating various positive and negative shapes. I love how there are many different surfaces and textures in this view with some highlighted in the bright Cornish sunlight, others thrown into deep shadow and some with interesting reflections of nearby objects. I enjoyed painting the way the boats, chains and ropes have been weathered over time with these ‘imperfections’ hinting at the journeys these vessels have taken. There is a sense of history and community in this view, that there have been fishing boats like these resting here for many centuries, all with stories to tell… This painting has been a real labour of love for me! It has taken approximately 127 hours to create over a couple of months. It is the largest painting I have ever done in terms of surface area, but I wanted to keep that level of detail that I really enjoy and which I thought was important to the scene. As it was so detailed, there were many days when I could manage no longer than 2 or 3 hours per day. The smaller boats seem slight and fragile but tethered to that sturdy wall, they feel secure and protected. Glad I stuck with it though! I really wanted to capture the hustle and bustle of this thriving fishing harbour set in this beautiful and historic panorama. I loved the idea of St Michael's Mount watching serenely and majestically over Newlyn through the ages and its busy fishing port. ‘Newlyn Harbour’ was chosen to be finalist at 2015’s ‘The Artist and Leisure Painter Open art Exhibition’ in the artist category and won an Alpha Art Shop Award. I wanted to capture these alongside the sense of history; the echoes of fishermen past and present who have used this unspoilt cove for centuries. It felt like the scene was all about layers. Physical layers of rust, paint and rock, but also of time, stories and lives. I used fine line pen, acrylic ink and acrylic gouache making the artwork a sort of drawing and painting in one. I built up layers of acrylic ink in the background through which the lines of the original drawing can be seen. It was a fantastic project to be involved with. `Artists and craftspeople from near and far were involved and nearly 200 pieces were created raising lots of money for this very worthwhile charity. The piece of the baulk wood that I received to paint on was full of shakes, texture and character. I loved drawing the long shadows cast by the weathered, windswept trees on this cold, Autumnal day. I also enjoyed drawing the traditional 'Cornish Hedges' on either side of the path which are stone underneath but which are built to let foliage grow on top and through the cracks so that they look fully green and natural, but are immensely strong underneath. This lane forms part of the circular walk around Loe Pool. It is full of atmosphere and I'm sure has been here for many years as a way to get to the farmers' fields whilst, at the same time, having a natural breathtaking view. The Bar itself is a stretch of sand which separates Loe Pool from the sea and is surrounded by myths & legends. The lane took servants from where the old market used to be, to the servants' entrances in the large town houses. He was very friendly and sat next to us, no doubt hoping for a crumb or two! In this acrylic painting, I tried to get the sense of distance with the background out of focus. I enjoyed observing and painting the abstract shapes and colours of the bark of the branches which I didn't notice at first glance. Since the global pandemic has taken hold, walking has become even more important to me for my physical and mental well being. There is something about striding through fresh air and nature that lifts my spirits even on my darkest of days. My favourite route through Helston includes this path through the lovely old churchyard of St Michael's. This particular trek was on a bright and very cold winter's morning. The air was crisp and the light was beautiful as it fell on the scene, lifting my spirits as I traversed through the older part of the town. In this drawing I used a mixture of graphite powder and graphite and carbon pencils which I blended with paper stumps. I built up many layers and used various erasers to create shading and negative shapes. I love to capture the tracks and paths bathed in the low, golden sunlight, enclosed either side by 'Cornish Hedges', meandering through the hillsides leading towards the sea. This particular view is towards Loe Bar as the leaves on the trees were just succumbing to the season and the low morning sun threw long shadows on the rough farm track. In this painting, I was trying to capture the light of the 'golden hour' as the sun was setting. It cast the most incredible glow which caused stunning reflections on the sea and bathed everything in a beautiful light. I really loved the light in this scene and the way it was glinting on the ropes. I enjoyed painting all the different textures, from the sea-worn stone harbour wall to the seaweed starting to dry out in the sun. It is an oasis of tranquillity, a peaceful place to come in prayerful meditation and experience stillness in a world that can often seem otherwise. In this painting I tried to capture a moment of peace as the afternoon sun falls on the lovely stone of the chapel’s walls and the trees surrounding it, creating dappled shadows. It withstands many storms, but on this day the waves were gently breaking and the sun was warming the rough textured stone. I often walk through this farm on the Degibna side of the Estate and on this particular morning, the farmer had parked up and was dealing with the cattle in the adjacent field. I was drawn to the textures of the rocky path, the thorny, Cornish hedges, and the wood and stone of the buildings. The many masts created an almost abstract pattern against the trees in the background and created fascinating reflections in the water which resembled a tangle of lines.
